Imagine stepping into a historic Greene and Greene home, surrounded by handcrafted woodwork and timeless architecture, only to be met with stacks of unopened boxes. That was the scene when Golden West Organizing ® arrived at the home of a writer with a vision: to transform her towering collection of books—40 boxes worth—into a functional and inspiring home library.
In this behind-the-scenes project, we tackled more than just unpacking. We honored the space, supported the client’s creative process, and built a system that celebrates both beauty and purpose. Here’s how it all came together.
Step One: Unpack With Purpose
Unpacking isn’t just about emptying boxes; it’s about intentional placement. With 40 boxes of books, the first step was to sort them in a way that would work for our client long-term.
We chose to organize by genre first, then alphabetize within each section. This method makes it easy for a writer (or avid reader) to find inspiration and reference material at a glance, no digging through piles or guessing which shelf holds what.
Step Two: Style for the Space
This home wasn’t just any space; it was a Greene and Greene original, known for intricate craftsmanship and timeless design. The custom bookshelves were built to echo that architecture, so we made sure our organizing choices did the same.
By spacing the books intentionally and allowing room for air, light, and a few curated objects, we balanced function with aesthetics. The result? A visually calming and deeply personal library that still respects the architectural integrity of the home.
Step Three: Create a System That Lasts
Organizing isn’t a one-time act; it’s about creating systems that support your life. For our writer-client, that meant a layout she could maintain during busy writing seasons, with room to grow her collection.
We left space for new books, created zones for specific projects, and ensured each shelf made sense not just visually but practically.
Lessons You Can Apply at Home
Whether you’re unpacking after a move or simply trying to tame a book collection that’s gotten out of hand, here are a few tips from this transformation you can use:
Sort by category first. It’s easier to find what you love when your books are grouped by topic or genre.
Use your shelves to tell a story. Mix books with personal objects, photos, or artwork that inspires you.
Honor your space. Let your room’s natural design guide your layout.
Think long-term. Leave room to grow and systems that you’ll actually maintain.
