From Chaos to Clarity: How Rico Nasty Transformed Her Garage in One Day

When your space looks like an "I Spy puzzle," it's time to call in the professionals.

Rico Nasty doesn't do basic. The rapper is known for music that's loud, raw, and unpredictable—but recently, that same chaotic energy had taken over somewhere unexpected: her garage.

Enter Dr. Julia Raz, professional organizer and owner of Golden West Organizing, who teamed up with Rico to tackle the overwhelming space and prove that even the busiest creatives can reclaim their homes.

The Goal: Function Over Perfection

From the start, Rico was clear about what she wanted. "I want to be able to look in my garage and know what I'm looking at," she explained. "Right now I feel like I'm looking at an I Spy puzzle."

The objective? Fit a second car in the garage and create a space that actually works for everyday life. Dr. Raz laid out the reality: "In order to make that happen, some things are going to have to go."

Rico was ready.

The Process: Everything Earns Its Place

Dr. Raz's approach centers on one guiding question: Why does this client want to get organized, and why now? That answer becomes the framework for every decision throughout the process.

"We pull everything out of the space and sort it by type into categories," Dr. Raz explained. "Seeing an emptied space allows us to reimagine the possibilities."

What emerged from Rico's garage was a fascinating mix: Halloween decorations tangled with fire extinguishers, car cleaning supplies, stage inflatables from her performances, and a collection of boots she'd nearly forgotten about. There were also some genuine surprises—including a long-lost Space Jam DVD that had Rico screaming with joy.

"I thought I left him at my last house!" she exclaimed.

The Art of Letting Go

The decluttering process brought up the inevitable tension between sentimentality and practicality. Rico found herself holding onto items like a picnic basket from a past stage performance.

Dr. Raz's gentle but firm guidance cut through the hesitation: "Think about your time and how valuable it is. Do you want to dedicate your time to this picnic basket, or other things?"

Some items were easy calls—worn-out shoes got donated without a second thought.

Others, like fan-made artwork and memorabilia from career milestones, earned their place in a dedicated keepsake area.

The key distinction? Items that still serve a purpose or hold genuine meaning stay. Everything else? It's time to say goodbye.

From Museum Exhibit to Mission

Dr. Raz's path to professional organizing took an unexpected turn. In 2019, she visited a museum exhibit called "Sarah Berman's Closet"—a display celebrating minimalism through the story of a woman who simplified her life after divorce.

"I was so moved by this display of minimalism," she recalled.

When the pandemic hit in 2021, she saw an opportunity. With everyone suddenly surrounded by their stuff at home, she launched Golden West Organizing as a side hustle while teaching remotely. What started small has since grown into a full team serving the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.

"Just like teaching, I feel the same joy in helping people," she said. "When I help someone make their life better, I feel fulfilled."

The Big Reveal

After a full day of sorting, deciding, and reorganizing, Rico walked into her transformed garage—and her reaction said it all.

"This is so much space. This doesn't even look real."

Then came the inevitable movie reference: "I feel like Step Brothers. There's so much room for activities!"

The garage now has space for workouts, room for a second car, and a clean, organized system for everything from memorabilia to seasonal decorations. Most importantly, it's designed to be maintainable.

The Takeaway

This transformation wasn't about creating a picture-perfect Pinterest garage. It was about building systems that work for real life—for a busy artist who needs functionality, not just aesthetics.

As Dr. Raz put it: "We want to put everything away in a beautiful way, but most importantly a functional way, so that it's really easy for the client to know where everything is and feel confident in their ability to maintain the space after we are gone."

Sometimes the clutter in our physical spaces mirrors the mental load we're carrying. Clearing one often lightens the other.
